On a crisp November morning, I joined the Raspberry and Jam team in Leigh Woods to shoot the launch video for Cereal Magazine.
If you are a visitor to the Bristol area and have the strength to rise early from your warm bed, then there are few better places to enjoy sunrise than this ancient forest.
After a hasty coffee we set off along a winding road until we reached Brunel’s famous Suspension Bridge which bisects the Avon Gorge. From there we hiked up a steep mud track, stamping our feet against the cold.
As we crunched through frosty fields towards the entrance of the woods, the first rivulets of morning light began to filter through the surrounding foliage. My steamy breath hung in the air like puffs of pipe smoke and while they filmed I wandered through the oak, lime and ash trees, occasionally stopping to photograph the deep umbers and reds of their changing leaves.
The Leigh Woods are steeped in history, stretching far back to Medieval mythology and there is a tangible sense of solemnity and grandeur to the place, particularly when looking down over the valley from the ridge’s summit. We worked until the beautiful ethereal light had turned into a strong glare and filmed the culminating ‘Pine cone’ scene of the film in the shade of a deep thicket – desperate to retain the supernal aesthetic from earlier in the day.
By that point, thoughts of crispy bacon were pervading my senses and after a few last shots, we made our way back to the centre of Bristol for a huge fry up, pleased with our work and excited for the launch of Cereal’s first volume. We hope you enjoy watching the short film as we much as we loved producing it.
